Event Details

InterFuse is a yearly, four day camping oriented event held in Missouri that upholds the ideals of the Burning Man Festival. It is the Midwest Regional Burn, similar to other Regional Burns held throughout the world every year. This year's InterFuse will be held May 12-15, 2011 at the Shriners Club Campground in Laquey, Missouri.

The goal of InterFuse is to unite the scattered Burners and potential Burners of the Midwest in the flames of this celebration of Art, Fire, and Life - further spreading the unique Burner Experience through the region.

Like at Burning Man, we will build a temporary city-community of tents, domes, light, dance, fire and music in the wilderness (in this case the forest, not the desert). We will celebrate our diversity continuously from Thursday through Sunday morning. Then we will dismantle our city and Leave No Trace.

InterFuse 2011 tickets must be purchased in advance, online or by mail order. Tickets will be available for purchase early March, 2011.

There is no vending at InterFuse nor corporate sponsorship. Bring everything you'll need to camp for the duration of your stay.

Come celebrate with Midwest Burners and many, many others as we extend this social phenomenon into America's Heartland!

Your Host: Midwest Burners

Midwest Burners is a diverse group of people, young and old, who never get the Burning Man Festival out of their blood - nor do they want to. They come from places all across the United States (not just the Midwest), they socialize frequently, keep in touch through Yahoo and Tribe Groups, meet, throw parties, make friends and have a great time camping.

Many Midwest Burners have never been to Burning Man but are drawn to it because of the close friendships and spontaneous culture it produces.

What Is A Regional Burn?

A Regional Burn is traditionally an outdoor event where people come together to recreate the Burning Man experience closer to home.

At the height of many Regional Burns a giant wooden effigy is burned while the participants celebrate with drums, music, and dance.

Since InterFuse occurs in the Spring, it is also a compression party of sorts. At InterFuse, we pump up our excitement for the Burning Man Festival that happens in Nevada, around Labor Day.

Come on out, camp, express yourself, and co-create a wonderful experience.

Other definitions of a Regional Burn would also include:

  • An event created solely by the actions and participation of those who attend. It's your party - evolved and propelled by the creative energies of everyone there.
  • A social experiment in temporary community. Many "first timers" are caught unprepared for the pervasive feelings of openness and togetherness that often accompany a Regional Burn.
  • One of the few places you'll ever find where people give freely to one another without thought of profit or return. This is called a Gift Economy. Vending and commerce are not allowed.
  • A time when people come together to express radical creativity in all of its forms.
  • A place of freedom, strangeness and amazement, radical art, music, dance, performance, and spontaneity.

How Can I Participate?

We Burners value participation, interactivity, self-expression and gifting, among other things. These values permeate our gatherings and can serve as a guide for newcomers wondering how they can contribute to the event.

Have you ever been to a party and thought something was missing, but someone else was throwing the party so you enjoyed it the best you could? Well, here is your chance to bring your crazy flair to InterFuse because, after all, it’s your event.

Below are some examples of our ideals in action. This is a list of ideas for participating and things that you can expect to experience at InterFuse:

  • Performance: At many Burner events you will see firedancing and open drum circles. However, performance can also encompass things such as fashion shows, juggling, DJing, playing in bands, presenting skits, doing stand-up comedy, or organizing spontaneous parades, to name just a few ideas.
  • Be A Good Citizen: We are actually creating a temporary town, of which you will be a citizen. Participate by treating the land with respect. Don’t create litter, pick up your trash, and Leave No Trace at the end of the event. Also, respect other people and their forms of self-expression. If you can’t handle seeing public nudity, don't come.
  • Volunteer: InterFuse runs on the efforts of responsible volunteers. Want to get involved? Check out the Volunteer page. There are lots of fun positions open.
  • Create: Art is the centerpiece of our gatherings, our main vehicle of interaction! You can manifest your creativity in many ways. Many times small touches make the deepest impact. Make and wear costumes and/or bodypaint. Create interactive games. Give unique gifts to people you meet and folks who are providing you with a good time. Another method of gifting is to contribute to a Theme Camp. Are they serving drinks? Contribute alcohol or cups. Is it a lounge? See if they want to add that bean bag you brought. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

"A party, like a meeting for worship, is not operating on the level of reason... It transcends logic. It slides willingly and consciously (if it is a good party) toward a celebration of the fact of being alive. The celebrants at a party share bread and wine and reach toward a communal touching, for a moment, of an existence that is not limited by the individual ego. The sound of a party is a sound of amity, of human beings who have become for a moment, and for nonaggressive reasons, something outside themselves."
